{"id":1583,"date":"2018-07-06T04:41:28","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T04:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/govinddas.com\/?p=1583"},"modified":"2018-07-06T05:23:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-06T05:23:24","slug":"installing-android-virtualbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/govinddas.com\/index.php\/installing-android-virtualbox\/","title":{"rendered":"Installing Android in VirtualBox"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<div class=\"entry-meta\"><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content e-content\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_10h47_57-650x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re itching give Android a try but don\u2019t necessarily want\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/howto\/22665\/run-android-on-your-netbook-or-desktop\/\">use your whole computer for the task<\/a>, the best option is to run it in a virtual machine using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/wiki\/VirtualBox\">VirtualBox<\/a>. It\u2019s actually pretty easy to set up, and will offer you the full Android experience in a matter of a few minutes. Let\u2019s do this thing.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a couple of things to get started:<\/p>\n<p><strong>VirtualBox<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/wiki\/VirtualBox\">Download and install VirtualBox<\/a>\u00a0if you don\u2019t already have it\u2014it\u2019s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Android x86 ISO:<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019ll need to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.android-x86.org\/\">grab the Android x86 ISO<\/a>\u00a0for whichever version of Android you\u2019d like to try. At the time of writing, Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) is the most stable release, which is what I\u2019m using here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before you get started, I\u00a0also\u00a0recommend making sure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/213795\/how-to-enable-intel-vt-x-in-your-computers-bios-or-uefi-firmware\/\">virtualization options are enabled in\u00a0your PC\u2019s BIOS<\/a>. Otherwise, you\u2019ll be in for a lot of troubleshooting later when things don\u2019t work as they should. You\u2019ve been warned!<\/p>\n<p>Once you have those things, you\u2019re ready to get started.<\/p>\n<p>Go ahead and fire up VirtualBox, then click the \u201cNew\u201d button to creation a new virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h07_14-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Name the virtual machine whatever you\u2019d like (I\u2019m using \u201cAndroid\u201d because that just kind of makes sense?), then select \u201cLinux\u201d as the type and \u201cLinux 2.6 \/ 3.x \/ 4.x (32-bit)\u201d as the version. Click Next.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h08_55-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For memory, I\u2019d give it 2048MB, especially if you\u2019re using a 32-bit build of Android (it can\u2019t handle anything more). If you\u2019re using a 64-bit build, feel free to use as much as you want.\u00a0Once you\u2019ve set the amount, click Next.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-313374 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h10_12-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click \u201cCreate\u201d to start building your virtual machine. For hard disk type, leave it set as VDI.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h12_02-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leave the hard disk size set as Dynamically Allocated, which will allow the virtual hard disk to grow as needed.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>On the next step, you can choose how much storage you\u2019d like to top the virtual machine out at\u2014even though it will dynamically resize, it won\u2019t be allowed to grow past the size you define here. Choose whatever size will work best for your system. I\u2019m leaving this at 8GB.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h14_26-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, click the Create button.<\/p>\n<p><em>Poof!<\/em>\u00a0Just like that, your new virtual machine is ready to use.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Install Android in a Virtual Machine<\/h2>\n<p>With your machine all set up, highlight it and click on Start at the top.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h16_25-650x490.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the machine starts up, point it to the Android ISO you downloaded. It should allow you to choose this as soon as you fire it up, but if not, click on Devices &gt; Optical Drives &gt; Choose Disk Image and select your Android ISO. Then use Machine &gt; Reset to restart the virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-313379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h41_32.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"554\" \/><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: When you click on the VirtualBox window, it will automatically capture the mouse and keyboard. To release the mouse and keyboard, just tap the right\u00a0Ctrl\u00a0key on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>Once the virtual machine loads the ISO, use the keyboard to scroll down to \u201cInstall \u201d and press enter. This will start the Android installer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-313380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h24_57.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"554\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Choose \u201cCreate\/Modify\u201d partitions. On the GPT screen, just choose \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h52_53-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the disk utility screen, select \u201cNew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h54_23-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Create a Primary disk and allow it to use the entire virtual hard disk space you chose earlier. In this case, it\u2019s 8GB. This should be selected by default.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h54_53-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hit Enter on the \u201cBootable\u201d option to make the partition bootable, then choose \u201cWrite.\u201d Tap Enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h56_42-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will need to type \u201cyes\u201d and tap Enter on the following screen to verify you want to write the partition table to the disk.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h56_50-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s finished, highlight the Quit option and tap Enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h57_46-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the partition you just created to install Android on and tap Enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h57_54-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select \u201cext4\u201d to format the partition.<\/p>\n<p>Highlight Yes and tap enter on the next screen to verify.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h59_12-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Choose \u201cYes\u201d to install the GRUB bootloader.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h59_21-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Choose \u201cYes\u201d to make the \/system folder re-writable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2017-06-27_09h59_29-650x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once everything is finished, you can choose to reboot into Android or reset. Feel free to do either thing right here, but don\u2019t forget to unmount the ISO file first.
