But many users find that third-party tools make these types of tasks easier, since such tools might not have the same limitations as a native partition management utility. Here are several good partition managers, which won&#8217;t cost you a dime.<\/p>\n<p>Partition management software programs let you create, delete, shrink, expand, split, or merge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/what-is-a-partition-2625958\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">partitions<\/a>\u00a0on your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/what-is-a-hard-disk-drive-2618152\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">hard drives<\/a>\u00a0or other storage devices.<\/p>\n<p>You can certainly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/how-to-partition-a-hard-drive-2626081\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">partition a hard drive in Windows without extra software<\/a>, but you won&#8217;t be able to do things like resize them or combine them without some extra help.<\/p>\n<p>Safe, easy to use partition tools weren&#8217;t always available, and even when you did find something you liked, it was expensive. These days, there are plenty of completely free disk partition software programs that even the novice tinkerer will love.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re expanding your Windows system partition, shrinking it to make room for an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/operating-systems-2625912\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">operating system<\/a>\u00a0dual-boot setup, or combining your two media partitions for those new UHD movie rips, these free disk partition tools will sure come in handy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content content-list\">\n<div class=\"content-list-title\">\n<div class=\"content-list-number\">\n<div class=\"item-number\">\n<h2>MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition<\/h2>\n<p>As its name suggests,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/download.cnet.com\/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Free-Edition\/3000-2094_4-10962200.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>Figure A<\/strong>) is a free tool for creating and managing partitions. It has a clean interface and does a nice job of providing access to the most common partition-related tasks without being overly complex.<\/p>\n<h4>Figure A<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"image pull-none image-large\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tr2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/f6e054b5-9df8-4364-b6d2-901f13c39bf1\/resize\/770x\/92bd2db8a207d09f431e5bbda60363f0\/01mini-tool-5.jpg\" alt=\"Figure A\" width=\"770\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>For example, this tool offers options for rebuilding the MBR, copying a disk, and even doing a disk surface test.<\/p>\n<h2>EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/download.cnet.com\/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Free-Edition\/3000-2248_4-10863346.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>Figure B<\/strong>) is another free tool for creating and managing partitions. At first glance, it appears to be somewhat lightweight. Upon closer inspection, however, you&#8217;ll discover that it includes some nice features, such as a disk cloning wizard and a wizard that lets you migrate an OS to an alternate location.<\/p>\n<h4>Figure B<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"image pull-none image-large\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tr2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/0476dd35-3104-4238-b548-dae71059f61e\/resize\/770x\/c85c19eca594005afc9146c3f16c901f\/03easeus-5.jpg\" alt=\"Figure B\" data-original=\"https:\/\/tr2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/0476dd35-3104-4238-b548-dae71059f61e\/resize\/770x\/c85c19eca594005afc9146c3f16c901f\/03easeus-5.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<h2>AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/download.cnet.com\/AOMEI-Partition-Assistant-Standard-Edition\/3000-2248_4-75118871.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>Figure C<\/strong>) is a free partition management tool. Its interface isn&#8217;t exactly original. In fact, I had to do a double take to see whether this application was just a reskinned version of one of the other applications discussed in this article. But the application is indeed unique. It has all the basics covered and offers lots of wizards to help with common tasks. Some of the more useful wizards include a partition recovery wizard, an NTFS to FAT32 converter, and even a tool to migrate your computer&#8217;s operating system to SSD.<\/p>\n<h4>Figure C<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"image pull-none image-large\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tr3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/92c3acec-87b7-4369-8737-57014ed3f124\/resize\/770x\/7b618ffdebce65b8ce8571e066338088\/05aomei-4.jpg\" alt=\"Figure C\" data-original=\"https:\/\/tr3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/92c3acec-87b7-4369-8737-57014ed3f124\/resize\/770x\/7b618ffdebce65b8ce8571e066338088\/05aomei-4.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<div>\n<div class=\"sharethrough-article\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_TR_recommendation_sharethrough_blog_page_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-blog&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition is free; an upgrade to the professional edition is available for $36.<\/p>\n<h2>Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition (64-bit)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/download.cnet.com\/Paragon-Partition-Manager-Free-Edition-64-bit\/3000-2248_4-10904411.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>Figure D<\/strong>) is a lightweight tool for creating and managing partitions. It appears to be designed for beginners. The application contains a series of colorful tiles with options for things like creating, resizing, and deleting partitions. When you make a selection, the application launches a wizard that guides you through the tasks. These wizards are largely automated and provide few options for controlling the selected operation.<\/p>\n<h4>Figure D<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"image pull-none image-large\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tr1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/76a0b417-bebe-4bf1-aec4-42c5f966c63f\/resize\/770x\/197695625fdb212e523b3c12c83fe973\/07paragon-1.jpg\" alt=\"Figure D\" data-original=\"https:\/\/tr1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/76a0b417-bebe-4bf1-aec4-42c5f966c63f\/resize\/770x\/197695625fdb212e523b3c12c83fe973\/07paragon-1.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>This application might do a good job of preventing someone who doesn&#8217;t know much about partitions from making any critical mistakes, but it probably isn&#8217;t the best option for IT professionals.<\/p>\n<h2>Macrorit Disk Partition Expert Free<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/download.cnet.com\/Macrorit-Disk-Partition-Expert-Free\/3000-2094_4-75913265.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macrorit Disk Partition Expert Free<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>Figure E<\/strong>) reminds me a lot of MiniTool Partition Wizard, but it allows for a greater variety of operations.<\/p>\n<h4>Figure E<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"image pull-none image-large\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tr1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/826840bb-a226-45f3-8fda-5a5c35aaaeac\/resize\/770x\/d127c880616e2fe7dd6281c4718007dd\/09macrorit-4.jpg\" alt=\"Figure E\" data-original=\"https:\/\/tr1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2016\/02\/17\/826840bb-a226-45f3-8fda-5a5c35aaaeac\/resize\/770x\/d127c880616e2fe7dd6281c4718007dd\/09macrorit-4.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Macrorit offers plenty of nice extras, including a disk defragmenter, a volume checker, and a disk surface test. Simple wizards make it easy to walk through some of these tasks.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what kind of file system you&#8217;re using, the free Active@ Partition Manager tool should be able to handle it, with support for all the common ones, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/what-is-file-allocation-table-fat-2625877\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">FAT<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/ntfs-file-system-2625948\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">NTFS<\/a>, HFS+, and EXT2\/3\/4.<\/p>\n<p>Active@ Partition Manager includes other features, too, like imaging a whole drive for backup purposes, converting between MBR and GPT, creating FAT32 partitions as large as 1 TB, editing boot records, and rolling back changes\u00a0by auto-backing up partition layouts.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Active@ Partition Manager resizes a partition, you can define the custom size in either megabytes or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/what-is-a-sector-2626003\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">sectors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/active-partition-manager-review-2624941\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">Active@ Partition Manager v6.0 Review &amp; Free Download<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Active@ Partition Manager can&#8217;t resize locked volumes, which means it won&#8217;t let you change the size of the system volume.<\/p>\n<p>Active@ Partition Manager should work just fine with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP, as well as Windows Server 2012, 2008, and 2003.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important:\u00a0<\/strong>Active@ Partition Manager is also able to enlarge the system partition, but I find that it always results in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-2625816\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\">BSOD<\/a>.
