With the free FTP client application FileZilla, you can upload new files to your Web server quickly and without having to log in to your Web host&#8217;s control panel. FileZilla also allows you to synchronize files and folders between your website and a local computer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-1\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">1.<\/p>\n<p>Download the FileZilla FTP client and install it to your computer if you have not already done so (link in Resources).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-2\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">2.<\/p>\n<p>Launch FileZilla, click the \u201cFile\u201d menu and select \u201cSite Manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-3\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">3.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the FTP server domain name for your website in the Host field. Some sites use the \u201cwww.domainname.com\u201d format for FTP services, while others require the \u201cftp.domainname.com\u201d format. If you are unsure of the format your site uses, refer to the welcome email message you received from your hosting company when you created the account for your domain name and website. The email should contain all the necessary FTP and login information you need to use FileZilla to upload and synchronize files.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-4\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">4.<\/p>\n<p>Type the FTP username and password you received from the hosting company in the corresponding fields of the Site Manager window. Enter \u201c21\u201d in the Port field unless your hosting company requires that you use a non-standard FTP port. Again, refer to the welcome email from the hosting company for this information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-5\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">5.<\/p>\n<p>Click the \u201cQuick Connect\u201d button to log in to the remote Web server. Wait a few seconds while FileZilla negotiates login credentials and establishes a connection with the server. FileZilla then displays the folders in the root directory of the Web server. Double-click the \u201cHome,\u201d \u201cPublic_HTML,\u201d \u201cWWW\u201d or other directory name that contains the files and folders for your website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-6\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">6.<\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to the folder you want to synchronize with your computer. Note the name of the folder, then click \u201cDisconnect\u201d on the toolbar and close FileZilla.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-7\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">7.<\/p>\n<p>Open Windows Explorer, then double-click the \u201cC:\\\u201d drive icon. Click the \u201cNew Folder\u201d button in the Windows Explorer window, then rename the folder so that it exactly matches the folder you want to synchronize on the server. Close the Windows Explorer window.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-8\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">8.<\/p>\n<p>Launch FileZilla again. Click &#8220;File&#8221; and &#8220;Site Manager,&#8221; then select your FTP server from the list. Click the \u201cAdvanced\u201d tab in the Site Manager window, then click the \u201cBrowse\u201d button next to the \u201cDefault Local Directory\u201d field. Navigate to the new folder you created in Windows Explorer, then click \u201cOpen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-9\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">9.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure that the folder name in the \u201cDefault Remote Directory\u201d field matches the one in the \u201cDefault Local Directory\u201d field exactly. Since you closed the FileZilla application while browsing the folder you want to synchronize on the server, the default folder names should match. However, if the folder names do not match, just type the folder name from the \u201cDefault Local Directory\u201d field (without the \u201cC:\\\u201d) into the \u201cDefault Remote Directory\u201d field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section-10\" class=\"section\">\n<p class=\"highlighted\">10.<\/p>\n<p>Click and enable the \u201cUse Synchronized Browsing\u201d option on the Advance tab, then click the \u201cConnect\u201d button. After you connect and establish an FTP session with the server, FileZilla prompts you to synchronize the folders. Click the \u201cYes\u201d button to download files from the server to the new folder you created on the hard drive of your local computer. After you perform the initial synchronization of the folders, FileZilla scans for changes every time you reconnect to the FTP server. If new files exist in either folder &#8212; local or remote &#8212; the application prompts you to synchronize the directories.
